How to play this or that
- 1
Pick a pack
Play all packs mixed, or choose one, such as food and drink or would you rather.
- 2
Tap your pick
Tap the card you like best. The bar shows how picks for that question split on this device.
- 3
Go to the next question
Press Next question for a new pair. Every question shows once before any repeat.
- 4
Try party mode
Set a timer, press Start party and the questions move on by themselves while everyone shouts their answer.
- 5
Make your own
In Custom mode, type any two options and the tool picks one with a fair coin flip.
How the questions and picks work
When you start, the tool shuffles every question in your pack into a deck with the Fisher Yates method and random numbers from the Web Crypto API. You then go through the deck one question at a time, so nothing repeats until you have seen them all. After that, a fresh shuffle starts a new round.
The split after each pick comes from picks made on this device only, such as everyone passing one tablet around at a party. It is stored in your browser, never sent to us, and you can reset it in the options.
Pick for me and Custom mode flip a fair coin. The side is decided first, and the quick flashing between cards is only for show. Each side always has an even chance.
Every question pack is written for a general audience, so the game works in classrooms, at family dinners, on streams and at work.

Ways to play this or that
Icebreakers
Start a class, a team meeting or a club with five quick questions. Ask people to share why they picked their side.
Party games
Put party mode on a big screen with a 10 second timer. Everyone moves to the left or right side of the room to vote.
Road trips
Pass a phone around the car and take turns tapping picks. The split bar shows who agrees with whom.
Streams and chat
Streamers can read a this or that question and let chat vote before revealing their own pick.
Writing warm ups
Pick a side and write three sentences on why it wins. Would you rather questions make great persuasive prompts.
Small decisions
When you are stuck between two takeout places, type both in Custom mode and let a fair coin decide.
Tips and variations
- Choose your pack. The packs are food and drink, travel and places, hobbies and fun, would you rather, school and work, animals and nature and movies, music and games. Mix them all for variety, or stay in one for a theme.
- Would you rather questions. The would you rather pack has bigger, sillier choices, like talk to animals or speak every language.
- Party timer. Pick 5, 10, 15, 20 or 30 seconds per question. Pause any time, or skip a question that does not fit the group.
- Share a question. Share question sends a link that opens the same pair, so friends can answer it too.
- Fullscreen. Fullscreen makes the cards big, and the space bar moves to the next question.
For a single yes or no answer, spin the Yes or No Wheel. With more than two options, use the Decision Maker, and to split a group into sides first, try the Random Team Generator.
We flipped the pick for me coin one million times
On October 23, 2026, we ran the This or That code with the same random source your browser uses, 1,000,000 coin flips and 20,000 full shuffles of every question.
50.04 percent
Flips that picked the left card
500,433 went left and 499,567 went right, as close to even odds as a fair coin gets.
20
Longest run of the same side
In 1,000,000 flips, one side once won 20 times in a row. Long streaks are normal in real randomness.
20,000
Shuffles with every question once
All 20,000 shuffled decks held each of the 315 questions exactly one time, with none missing and none doubled.
315
This or that questions
Spread over 7 packs, from food and travel to school, nature and entertainment.
56
Times Pizza or Burgers came first
With 315 questions, any one pair should open the deck about 63 times in 20,000 shuffles.
5 to 30
Seconds per party question
Short timers keep a party moving, and longer ones leave time to explain your pick.
The deck and the coin are random, but your picks are not. The split bar shows real choices made on this device, which makes it fun to compare tastes with friends.
