How the random country wheel works

The country is picked first, using the Web Crypto API in your browser and rejection sampling, so every country in your pool has exactly the same chance. Then the wheel spins and lands on the slice that matches it.

A wheel with all 194 country names would have slices too thin to read. So when more than 100 countries are in play, the wheel shows continents instead, and each slice is sized by how many countries it holds. Africa, with 54 countries, gets a much bigger slice than South America, with 12. Because the sizes match the counts, the wheel never tips the odds toward small continents.

Pick a single continent, or a few small ones, and the wheel switches to country names. A Europe wheel, for example, has 44 equal slices.

The list has 194 countries across six continents, including Vatican City and Palestine. Continents follow the United Nations regions, so Russia counts as Europe and Central America and the Caribbean count as North America. Population bands use 2024 United Nations estimates.

Ideas for a random country generator

  • Geography lessons

Spin a country, then ask students to find it on a map and name its capital. Narrow it to one continent for a unit.

  • Flag quizzes

Cover the name, show the flag and let everyone guess. Ten instant countries make a quick quiz round.

  • Food nights

Spin a country and cook or order a dish from it. A random country makes dinner feel like a small trip.

  • Travel daydreams

Pick a random country and plan a dream trip there. Look up the sights, the food and the best time to go.

  • Streams and challenges

Streamers can spin a country for a map game round, a music pick or a cooking challenge on air.

  • Writing and art

Set a story or a drawing in a random country. The fun fact on the card gives you a place to start.

Tips and variations

  • Random country wheel by continent. Turn on one continent to spin a wheel of country names, great for a focused lesson.
  • Pick several countries. Set Countries per instant pick up to ten for a quiz round or a list of trip ideas. A batch never repeats a country.
  • Mix two continents. Turn on South America and Oceania together for a wheel of 26 countries you may know less well.
  • Classroom fullscreen. Fullscreen enlarges the wheel and the flag, and the space bar spins again.
  • Keep a record. History lists your last 20 countries on this device, with a count for each continent.

Pair it with the Random Animal Generator to find an animal from your country, or spin the Random Letter Generator and name a country that starts with that letter. To choose between your own places, build a custom wheel with the Decision Maker.

We spun the country wheel one million times

On October 23, 2026, we ran the country generator code 1,000,000 times with every continent on, using the same random source your browser uses.

  • 1,000,000

Spins that landed on the right slice

Every one of the 1,000,000 continent wheel spins stopped on the continent of the country picked before the spin. So did all 200,000 spins of a Europe wheel.

  • 27.90 percent

    Spins that landed on Africa

Africa holds 54 of the 194 countries, which is 27.84 percent, so its big slice won just as often as it should.

  • 6.15 percent

Spins that landed on South America

South America has 12 countries, 6.19 percent of the list. Its smaller slice matched that share.

  • 5,352

    Most picks, Bulgaria

The least picked country was Antigua and Barbuda with 4,956. An even split gives about 5,155 each.

  • 1,133

    Picks to see every country

One at a time, it took 1,133 picks on average to see all 194 countries, and 2,584 in the slowest of 2,000 tries.

  • 6

    Continents on the full wheel

Each slice is sized by its number of countries, so a spin is the same as picking one country from all 194.

A continent wheel can look unfair at first glance, since Africa takes more than a quarter of it. But every slice holds exactly its share of countries, so each country keeps the same tiny chance.

Frequently asked questions

How does the random country generator work?

It picks one country from your chosen continents with the Web Crypto API, then spins the wheel to that country or its continent. Every country in the pool has the same chance.

How many countries are on the wheel?

There are 194 countries across six continents, including Vatican City and Palestine. You can spin all of them or narrow the list by continent.

Why does the wheel show continents instead of countries?

Names of more than 100 countries would be too small to read. The continent slices are sized by their number of countries, so the odds for each country stay exactly even.

Can I spin a wheel of countries from one continent?

Yes. Turn on a single continent, such as Europe or Africa, and the wheel shows every country name in it as an equal slice.

Does it show the flag and capital?

Yes. Each result shows the national flag, the capital city, the continent, a population band and one fun fact about the country.

Can I get more than one random country at a time?

Yes. Set Countries per instant pick to any number up to ten and press the instant button. A single pick never repeats a country.

Which continent is Russia in?

Russia spans Europe and Asia. This tool follows the United Nations regions, which place Russia in Europe and Turkey and Kazakhstan in Asia.

Should I use it to make real travel or life decisions?

No. The results are random and meant for fun, learning and low stakes choices. Do not use them for medical, legal, financial or safety decisions.
