How the random alphabet generator stays fair

A random alphabet generator has one job. Every letter in play should have the same chance, every single time. With all 26 letters on the wheel, each one has a 1 in 26 chance, which is about 3.8 percent. The letter you got last time has no effect on the next one.

Each pick starts with a random number from the Web Crypto API, the strong source of randomness built into your browser. That number chooses the letter before the wheel moves. The spin you see is an animation that slows down and lands on the letter that was already picked.

Turning a big random number into one of 26 letters can tilt the odds by a tiny amount. We use rejection sampling, which throws away the few values that would cause the tilt and draws again. When you ask for several letters without repeats, the pool is shuffled with the Fisher Yates method, so every order is just as likely as any other.

Filters only change which letters are in the pool. Pick vowels and each of the five vowels gets a one in five chance. The wheel always shows exactly the letters that can come up, so what you see is what you can get.

Fair by design

  • Picked with the Web Crypto API
  • Every letter in play has the same chance
  • The wheel shows only letters that can win
  • Runs on your device, nothing sent to a server

Ideas for a random letter wheel

  • Word games

Play category games where everyone names a food, an animal and a city that start with the same letter. Turn on word game letters to skip the tricky ones.

  • Classroom practice

Teachers use the letter wheel for phonics warm ups, spelling bees and letter sound games. Elimination mode makes sure every letter gets a turn.

  • Drawing and lettering

Draw a letter in a brand new style, or sketch three things that start with it. Hand lettering fans pick a random letter each day for practice.

  • Names and ideas

When you are stuck on a name for a pet, a character or a team, draw a starting letter and brainstorm from there. It breaks you out of the same old ideas.

  • Party and road trip games

Play I spy, name a song or the alphabet game with a fair letter each round. The big wheel is easy to see from across the room.

  • Streams and challenges

Streamers let the wheel choose a letter for a challenge, such as only using items that start with it. Share a link so viewers can try the same setup.

Tips and variations

  • Use elimination mode. Each letter you draw leaves the wheel until all of them are used, then Start over fills it again. It is the fairest way to give every letter a turn.
  • Turn on word game letters. This skips Q, U, V, X, Y and Z, the six letters left off the classic 20 sided die for category word games.
  • Pick a random letter from A to Z, or a smaller range. Use the From and To boxes to draw only from A to G, or from any stretch of the alphabet.
  • Choose upper, lower or both. Show capital letters, small letters, or both together like Aa, which is handy for reading and handwriting practice.
  • Try another alphabet. Switch to Spanish to add Ñ, or to the 24 letter Greek alphabet for math, science and club names.

When you need a number instead, try Pick a Number. For something to draw, use the Random Object Generator, or put your own words on a custom wheel with the Decision Maker.

We drew one million random letters

On October 23, 2026, we ran the code behind this generator 1,000,000 times, picking one letter from A to Z on the wheel each time with the same random source your browser uses. Here is what came out.

  • 39,007

Times H came up, the most of any letter

The rarest letter was N with 38,068. A perfect split gives each letter about 38,462.

  • 19.23 percent

    Draws that were vowels

Five of the 26 letters are vowels, which works out to 19.23 percent. The real count landed right beside it.

  • 7.09

Letters drawn on average before the first repeat

Across 100,000 tests, the longest wait was 22 letters. Repeats show up sooner than most people expect.

  • 100,000

Elimination runs that used every letter once

Out of 100,000 runs, each one drew all 26 letters with no gaps and no repeats.

  • 0

Hard letters drawn in word game mode

    In 200,000 draws from the 20 letter pool, Q, U, V, X, Y and Z never came up once.

  • 1,000,000

Spins that landed on the picked letter

Out of 1,000,000 spins, the wheel stopped on the letter chosen before the spin every time.

The counts sit close to an even split without matching it exactly, which is what real randomness looks like.

Frequently asked questions

How do I pick a random letter from A to Z?

Press Spin the wheel or the instant button above. The generator picks one of the 26 letters at random, and each letter has the same chance of about 3.8 percent.

Is the random letter generator really random?

Yes. Every letter is picked with the Web Crypto API in your browser, and rejection sampling keeps the odds exactly even. The letter is chosen before the wheel spins, so the animation cannot change it.

Can I generate more than one letter at a time?

Yes. Set letters per pick to any number from 1 to 26 and press the instant button. Leave repeats off to get a batch where no letter shows up twice.

Which letters does word game mode skip?

Word game mode skips Q, U, V, X, Y and Z. These are the letters left off the classic 20 sided die used in category word games, because so few words start with them.

How does elimination mode work?

Each letter you draw leaves the wheel until every letter has been used once. The status line shows how many are left, and Start over puts them all back.

Is Y a vowel in this generator?

No. The vowel filter uses A, E, I, O and U. If you want Y in the pool, keep the filter on All and switch off any letters you do not need.

Can I use the letter wheel in class?

Yes. Press Fullscreen to fill a projector or smart board, and press Esc to leave. Space or Enter spins the wheel, and your settings stay saved on your device.

Should I use random letters for important choices?

No. The generator is random and meant for fun and low stakes choices, such as games and practice. Do not use it for medical, legal, financial or safety decisions.
