How the team picker keeps it fair
A good team picker gives everyone the same chance to land on any team. This one shuffles your list with the Fisher Yates method, using random numbers from the Web Crypto API in your browser. Every possible order of names is just as likely, and then the shuffled list is dealt into teams.
Team sizes stay as even as possible. Split 10 people into 3 teams and you get teams of 4, 3 and 3, never 6, 2 and 2. When you choose people per team instead, no team goes over the size you picked.
Balance by skill works a little differently. You add a skill number after each name, like Sam 4. The list is shuffled first, so people with the same skill land in a random order. Then people are handed out from the highest skill down, each to the team with the lowest total so far. You get teams with close skill totals that are still mixed at random.
Captains are picked at random from inside each finished team, so every member has the same chance to lead.
Fair by design

Ways to use a random team generator
PE and sports
Coaches and PE teachers split a class into fair sides in seconds. Balance by skill keeps one team from getting all the fastest players.
Classroom groups
Make project groups, reading circles or lab partners without anyone feeling picked last. Fullscreen puts the teams up on the board.
Quiz and trivia nights
Mix regulars and newcomers into quiz teams with fun names ready to go. Captains can be the ones who hand in the answer sheet.
Game nights
Split friends for board games, card games or online matches. Shuffle again when everyone wants a rematch with new sides.
Work and training
Break a workshop or meeting into small discussion groups. Set people per team to 3 or 4 and every group comes out the right size.
Parties and events
Sort guests for relay races, scavenger hunts or team games. Copy the list and drop it straight into the group chat.
Tips and variations
- Split into teams by size. Choose People per team when the size of each group matters more than how many groups there are, such as pairs or groups of four.
- Balance by skill. Add a number from 1 to 5 after each name, like Mia 5 or Leo 2. Names without a number count as the average of everyone else.
- Pick captains. Each team gets one random captain, marked with a crown and listed first.
- Keep your class list. Names stay saved in this browser, so the list is ready next time. Press Clear to remove it.
- Share the exact teams. The share link holds the names and the teams, so everyone sees the same result.
To pick just one person, spin a custom wheel with the Decision Maker, or give everyone a number and use Pick a Number. For a quick group vote, play This or That.
We made one hundred thousand sets of teams
On October 23, 2026, we ran the team generator code 100,000 times for each test below, with the same random source your browser uses.
27.28 percent
Times two friends landed on the same team
With 12 people in 3 teams of 4, a friend can fill 3 of the other 11 spots on your team, or 27.27 percent. It happened 27,278 times.
24.99 percent
Times one person was picked as captain
In teams of 4 with captains on, each person should lead one time in four. The count was 24,988 out of 100,000.
4.62 points
Average skill gap with a plain shuffle
For 12 players with skills from 1 to 5, the gap between the strongest and weakest team averaged 4.62 points, and reached 12 in the worst split.
0 points
Average skill gap with balance on
Balance by skill made all three teams exactly even in 100,000 of 100,000 splits. A plain shuffle managed that 3,099 times.
100,000
Splits with everyone placed exactly once
Splitting 23 people into 4 teams always gave teams of 6, 6, 6 and 5, with no one missing and no one doubled.
2,500
Possible fun team names
50 lively words times 50 mascots, and no two teams in one split ever share a word.
Random does not always mean even, which is why balance by skill exists. Use a plain shuffle for fun mixes, and turn on balance when the game needs close teams.
Frequently asked questions
How do I split a list of names into random teams?
Paste the names into the box above, one per line or separated by commas. Choose how many teams you want, then press Make teams.
Is the team generator really random?
Yes. The list is shuffled with the Web Crypto API in your browser using the Fisher Yates method, so every order of names is equally likely. Nothing is decided by a server.
What happens if the teams do not divide evenly?
The extra people are spread out, so team sizes never differ by more than one. For example, 10 people in 3 teams become teams of 4, 3 and 3.
Can I make balanced teams by skill?
Yes. Turn on Balance by skill and add a number after each name, like Sam 4. The generator spreads the skill so each team ends up with a close total.
Can the team picker choose captains?
Yes. Turn on Pick captains and each team gets one captain chosen at random from its members. The captain is listed first with a crown.
How many names can I use?
You can add up to 200 names and make up to 50 teams. Each name can be up to 40 letters long so the team cards stay easy to read.
Are my names saved or shared?
Your list is saved only in your own browser so it is ready next time, and it is never sent to us. A share link carries the names only when you choose to share it.
Should I use random teams for important choices?
No. The generator is meant for games, classes and other low stakes groupings. Do not use it for medical, legal, financial or safety decisions.
