The Random Animal Generator picks a random animal from a list of 246 real animals, from mammals and birds to fish, insects and sea creatures. Each card shows a color picture, the animal group, its habitat and a short fun fact. Filter the list, pick up to ten animals at once or switch to drawing prompts.

How the random animal picker works
Every animal that matches your filters goes into one pool, and each one has exactly the same chance to come up. The pick uses the Web Crypto API in your browser, the same kind of random numbers used for security. A method called rejection sampling throws away the few raw numbers that would favor the start of the list, so no animal gets an edge.
When you pick more than one animal, the generator draws them without repeats, so a grid of ten always shows ten different animals. In drawing prompt mode each animal also gets its own twist, and no twist shows up twice in one batch.
The animal is chosen before the cards start to shuffle. The shuffle is only for fun, and the pictures for your result start loading straight away so they are ready when the cards turn over.
The list sticks to real, living animals. Facts are short and checked against common references. Every one of the 246 animals has its own color picture, drawn to match that animal, so you never see the wrong animal next to a name.
Fair by design

Ideas for a random animal generator
Drawing practice
Artists of any level can switch to drawing prompts and get ideas like a koala wearing rain boots. Set a timer and sketch fast.
Classroom science
Teachers can pick a random animal for a quick research task. Students find its habitat, diet and one more fact to add to the card.
Charades and guessing games
One player picks a random animal and keeps the card hidden, then acts it out. Everyone else guesses before the timer runs out.
Writing prompts
Pick three animals and write a short story where they meet. Odd mixes like a penguin, a camel and an owl make the best plots.
Streams and videos
Streamers can let chat pick a random animal to draw live, or run a fullscreen spin as a quick break between games.
Family trivia
Read the fun fact aloud and let everyone guess the animal. Keep score and see who knows the most about wildlife.
Tips and variations
- Show it big. Open fullscreen to put the animal picture on a big screen. It works well for a guessing game or a quick drawing round.
- Animal drawing prompts. Drawing prompts mode adds one of 35 twists, such as riding a bike or floating in space, which gives you 8,610 possible prompts.
- Theme days. Choose ocean animals for a sea unit, or polar lands for a winter lesson. The status line shows how many animals are left in play.
- Big screen mode. Fullscreen shows the cards large enough for a projector, and the space bar picks again.
- Share the same animals. A share link opens the exact cards you got, so a whole class or group chat can draw the same prompt.
For something other than animals, try the Random Object Generator for everyday things, spin for a place with the Random Country Generator, or pick a starting letter with the Random Letter Generator and name an animal that begins with it.
We picked one million random animals
On October 24, 2026, we ran the animal generator code 1,000,000 times with every filter on, using the same random source your browser uses.
246
Animals in the full list
96 mammals plus birds, reptiles, fish, amphibians, insects and other animals like octopuses and crabs.
38.95 percent
Picks that were mammals
Mammals make up 39.02 percent of the list, and the picks matched that share almost exactly.
4,232
Most picks, Manatee
The least picked animal was the ruby throated hummingbird with 3,899. A perfectly even split would give each animal about 4,065.
1,493
Picks to meet every animal
Picking one at a time, it took 1,493 picks on average to see all 246 animals at least once, and 2,943 in the slowest of 2,000 tries.
100,000
Batches of ten with no repeats
All 100,000 test batches of ten drawing prompts held ten different animals and ten different twists.
8,610
Possible drawing prompts
246 animals times 35 twists, so you can draw for a very long time without a repeat.
Some animals will come up a few times before others appear at all. That is how real randomness behaves, and it is why the picker never quietly skips animals you have already seen.
Frequently asked questions
How does the random animal generator work?
It puts every animal that matches your filters into a pool and picks one with the Web Crypto API in your browser. Each animal in the pool has exactly the same chance.
How many animals are in the list?
There are 246 real animals, including 96 mammals plus birds, reptiles, fish, amphibians, insects and other creatures. Each one has a group, a habitat and a fun fact.
Can I get a random animal with pictures?
Yes. All 246 animals have a full color picture, so every card you get shows one.
Can I get a random animal to draw?
Yes. Switch to Drawing prompts and each card becomes an idea like Draw a sloth wearing headphones. You can pick up to ten prompts at once.
Can I pick only one type of animal?
Yes. Tap the animal group chips to keep only the groups you want, and use the habitat menu to narrow it down further, for example ocean birds.
Will the same animal come up twice?
Not inside one pick of several animals. Between separate picks it can happen, because every pick starts fresh with the full pool, just like rolling a die.
Is my history saved anywhere?
Your recent animals are saved only in your own browser so you can look back at them. Nothing is sent to us, and the Clear button removes the list.
Can I use it for important decisions?
No. The animals are random and meant for fun, learning and low stakes choices. Do not use them for medical, legal, financial or safety decisions.
